Nice tutorial, Jaye. I make pillows now and then. I learned a cool trick to help with those funny, sort of empty corner points. (but maybe cutting the square a bit smaller all around will work too.) The corner trim: measure 1/2 inch down from each side of the corner and mark it. Then measure 3 inches down each side from the corners. line up a ruler from the 1/2 inch mark to the 3 inch mark. Cut. do the same for the other side of the corner. And for the other three corners.

I have found this to make a really trim pillow that looks square, but has nice tight corners.

The solid white is a Modern Quilt thing. Very trendy, though I think the trend is swinging towards grey. I think there are a lot of blues as well. Thanks for your kind words!

I did it with just batting, but should have done it with a cloth backing. They would have been more finished. For now I am fine, but will need more for next year.

Bright color borders, very cheerful. Did you do it with just batting or did you have batting and cloth backing? Do you need more embroidered bits?

I think, perhaps, that if there really IS a lot of red and pink that it somehow blends in as my eye was drawn to the blues right away! Either way, it is such a cheery quilt!

I recently read somewhere that there seems to be a lot of quilts out lately, with the solid white complimenting all types of prints. I like the looks of these combinations. Black is dramatic too, but in a different way.

No matter...YOURS is purdy. :) Enjoy the process!

You have to read some of my earlier posts about making Teacher Pillows. These went so smoothly in comparison.

Good to know. I have been making an effort to use different colors, but I do have a lot of red and pink. If you are surprised at that, raise your hand. ;-)

Perhaps it looks differently in person, but via photo on-line, it does not appear to be dominated by red and pink.

There is a Native Daughters of the Golden West as well. Check ndgw.org. That is the women's org and they are concerned with CA history as well. The parlor list is here: http://www.ndgw.org/parlor.htm. I don't see a Parlor in Long Beach and don't know what is close to you.

Perhaps you have moved to an area where the light is stronger and the more neutral and subtle colors look washed out?

Missed this yesterday..."pillow hell" almost had me rolling on the floor here. Btw, the pillows look great. Read through the "About Us" page of NSGW - very interesting. I'm enamored with California History and was not aware of this organization. Batting as a foundation for the pillow? - must remember that tip.
