I started with a pattern in the Pam & Nicky Lintott book, Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts, (2009) called Stepping Stones. Something about building blocks into an overall design intrigued me.

The problem with this pattern was that the authors did not emphasize where darks and lights should go. I think they assumed that the maker would use the same or similar fabrics.

I bought the fabrics at the Granary, but I didn’t buy large pieces of the whole line, so I knew I needed some additional fabrics. Also, I want to take Joanna Figueroa’s advice and work towards using only 80% of a line so that my quilts look different from other quilts that use a whole line.

I used EQ7 to help figure out placement of the fabrics during the process of making the quilt. I modified the border from the original pattern using EQ so that the quilt looked more finished.

I worked on the majority of this quilt during one of Sandy’s Boxing Day Sew-ins on Twitter and it was helpful to be cheered on to get this thing done. I think I got a little off track while sewing it, because of the problems with contrast.

Colleen Granger quilted it and I am very pleased with how it came out.

Fabrics:

Circa 1934 by Moda

Random greens, blacks and reds from my stash

Posts About this Quilt:

Circa 1934 Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones Revised

Stepping Stones Progress on BDSI 2011

Stepping Stones Returns

Stepping Stones Finished

Materials:

100 cotton fabric

100 cotton thread

Techniques

machine quilted

Machine Pieced

Details:

Year: 2013

Size:

Quilted By:

Colleen Granger

Story The Stepping Stones quilt was finished on February 14, 2013.
