Most species are known as willow, but some narrow-leaved shrub species are called <em>osier<\/em>, and some broader-leaved species are referred to as <em>sallow<\/em> (from <a title=\"Old English\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_English\">Old English<\/a> <em>sealh<\/em>, related to the <a title=\"Latin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin\">Latin<\/a> word <em>salix<\/em>, willow). Some willows (particularly <a title=\"Arctic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic\">arctic<\/a> and <a title=\"Alpine climate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpine_climate\">alpine<\/a> species) are low-growing or creeping shrubs; for example the Dwarf Willow (<em><a title=\"Salix herbacea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salix_herbacea\">Salix herbacea<\/a><\/em>) rarely exceeds 6\u00a0cm (2\u00a0in) in height, though spreading widely across the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Willows are very cross-fertile, and numerous <a title=\"Hybrid (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hybrid_%28biology%29\">hybrids<\/a> occur, both naturally and in cultivation. A well-known <a title=\"Ornamental plant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ornamental_plant\">ornamental<\/a> example is the Weeping Willow (<em>Salix \u00d7 sepulcralis<\/em>), which is a hybrid of Peking Willow (<em><a title=\"Salix babylonica\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salix_babylonica\">Salix babylonica<\/a><\/em>) from <a title=\"China\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\">China<\/a> and White Willow (<em><a title=\"Salix alba\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salix_alba\">Salix alba<\/a><\/em>) from <a title=\"Europe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\">Europe<\/a>.
