At one time, fire was considered an element but no longer.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><a title=\"Flame\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flame\">flame<\/a><\/em> is the visible portion of the fire. If hot enough, the gases may become ionized to produce <a title=\"Plasma (physics)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plasma_%28physics%29\">plasma<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fire#cite_note-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Depending on the substances alight, and any impurities outside, the <a title=\"Color\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Color\">color<\/a> of the flame and the fire&#8217;s <a title=\"Intensity (heat transfer)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intensity_%28heat_transfer%29\">intensity<\/a> will be different.<\/p>\n<p>Fire in its most common form can result in <a title=\"Conflagration\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conflagration\">conflagration<\/a>, which has the potential to cause physical damage through <a title=\"Burning\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burning\">burning<\/a>. Fire is an important process that affects ecological systems across the globe. The positive effects of fire include stimulating growth and maintaining various ecological systems. Fire has been used by humans for cooking, generating heat, signaling, and propulsion purposes.
