I wanted to use this word before another year went by.<\/p>\n<p>Take 5 minutes to do any kind of artistic response: poem, doodle, quilt, pastel, pencil. ANYTHING counts. No rules; just do it!<\/p>\n<p>Post the direct URL (link) where your drawing, doodle, artwork is posted (e.g. your blog, Flickr) in the comments area of this post. I would really like to keep all the artwork together and provide a way for others to see your work and\/or your blog.<\/p>\n<p>The Creative Prompt Project, also, has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/aqcpp\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr group<\/a>, which you can join to\u00a0 post your responses. Autumn marks the transition from <a title=\"Summer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Summer\">summer<\/a> into <a title=\"Winter\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winter\">winter<\/a>, in September (<a title=\"Northern Hemisphere\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Hemisphere\">Northern Hemisphere<\/a>) or March (<a title=\"Southern Hemisphere\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Hemisphere\">Southern Hemisphere<\/a>) when the arrival of <a title=\"Night\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Night\">night<\/a> becomes noticeably earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Equinox\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equinox\">equinoxes<\/a> might be expected to be in the middle of their respective seasons, but temperature lag (caused by the thermal latency of the ground and sea) means that seasons appear later than dates calculated from a purely astronomical perspective. The actual lag varies with region. Some cultures regard the autumnal equinox as &#8220;mid-autumn&#8221;, others with a longer lag treat it as the start of autumn.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autumn#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Meteorologists (and most of the <a title=\"Temperate countries\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperate_countries\">temperate countries<\/a> in the southern hemisphere)<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autumn#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> use a definition based on months, with autumn being September, October and November in the northern hemisphere,<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autumn#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> and March, April and May in the southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"North America\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\">North America<\/a>, autumn is usually considered to start with the September equinox.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autumn#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> In traditional East Asian <a title=\"Solar term\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_term\">solar term<\/a>, autumn starts on or around 8 August and ends on about 7 November. In <a title=\"Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\">Ireland<\/a>, the autumn months according to the national meteorological service, <a title=\"Met \u00c9ireann\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Met_%C3%89ireann\">Met \u00c9ireann<\/a>, are September, October and November. <sup id=\"cite_ref-5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autumn#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> However, according to the <a title=\"Irish Calendar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irish_Calendar\">Irish Calendar<\/a> which is based on ancient <a title=\"Gaelic Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaelic_Ireland\">Gaelic<\/a> traditions, autumn lasts throughout the months of August, September, and October, or possibly a few days later, depending on tradition.
