These were part of <a title=\"XXX Corps (United Kingdom)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XXX_Corps_%28United_Kingdom%29\">XXX Corps<\/a>, commanded by Lieutenant General <a title=\"Gerard Bucknall\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerard_Bucknall\">Gerard Bucknall<\/a>, which in turn was part of Lieutenant <a title=\"Miles Dempsey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miles_Dempsey\">General Miles Dempsey<\/a>&#8216;s <a title=\"British 2nd Army\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_2nd_Army\">British 2nd Army<\/a>. Gold had three main assault sectors\u00a0\u2013 these were designated (from west to east): Item, Jig (split into sections Green and Red), and King (also in two sections named Green and Red). A fourth, named How, was not used as a landing area.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gold_Beach#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The beach was to be assaulted by the 50th Division between <a title=\"Asnelles\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asnelles\">Le Hamel<\/a> and <a title=\"Ver sur Mer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ver_sur_Mer\">Ver sur Mer<\/a>. Attached to them were elements of <a title=\"79th Armoured Division (United Kingdom)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/79th_Armoured_Division_%28United_Kingdom%29\">79th (Armoured) Division<\/a>.
