Historically, a &#8220;ship&#8221; was a <a title=\"Sailing vessel\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sailing_vessel\">sailing vessel<\/a> with at least three <a title=\"Square rig\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Square_rig\">square-rigged<\/a> masts and a full <a title=\"Bowsprit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bowsprit\">bowsprit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ships and boats have developed alongside humanity. In armed conflict and in daily life they have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate vessels for combat and to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4\u00a0billion tons of cargo in 2007.<sup id=\"cite_ref-unctad07x_1-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship#cite_note-unctad07x-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> As of 2011, there are about 104,304 ships with <a title=\"IMO ship identification number\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IMO_ship_identification_number\">IMO<\/a> numbers in the world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Ships were always a key in history&#8217;s great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as <a title=\"Zheng He\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zheng_He\">Zheng He<\/a> spread such inventions as the <a title=\"Compass\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass\">compass<\/a> and <a title=\"Gunpowder\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gunpowder\">gunpowder<\/a>. Ships have been used for such purposes as <a title=\"Colonization\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonization\">colonization<\/a> and the <a title=\"Slave trade\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slave_trade\">slave trade<\/a>, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs.
