Soldiers still wear helmets, now often made from <a title=\"Kevlar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kevlar\">lightweight plastic materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In civilian life, helmets are used for recreational activities and sports (e.g. <a title=\"Jockey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jockey\">jockeys<\/a> in <a title=\"Horse racing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horse_racing\">horse racing<\/a>, American football, <a title=\"Hockey helmet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hockey_helmet\">ice hockey<\/a>, <a title=\"Cricket helmet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cricket_helmet\">cricket<\/a>, <a title=\"Batting helmet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_helmet\">baseball<\/a>, and <a title=\"Rock climbing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_climbing\">rock climbing<\/a>); dangerous work activities (e.g. <a title=\"Construction\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Construction\">construction<\/a>, <a title=\"Mining\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mining\">mining<\/a>, riot police); and transportation (e.g. <a title=\"Motorcycle helmet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motorcycle_helmet\">Motorcycle helmets<\/a> and <a title=\"Bicycle helmet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bicycle_helmet\">bicycle helmets<\/a>). Since the 1990s, most helmets are made from <a title=\"Resin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resin\">resin<\/a> or <a title=\"Plastic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plastic\">plastic<\/a>, which may be reinforced with fibers such as aramids.<\/p>\n<p>The word <i>helmet<\/i> is <a title=\"Diminutive\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diminutive\">diminutive<\/a> from <i>helm<\/i>, a Medieval word for protective combat headgear. The Medieval <a title=\"Great helm\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_helm\">great helm<\/a> covers the whole head and often is accompanied with <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Camail\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camail\">camail<\/a> protecting throat and neck as well.
