A taxicab conveys passengers between locations of their choice. This differs from other modes of <a title=\"Public transport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_transport\">public transport<\/a> where the pick-up and drop-off locations are determined by the service provider, not by the passenger, although <a title=\"Demand responsive transport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demand_responsive_transport\">demand responsive transport<\/a> and <a title=\"Share taxi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Share_taxi\">share taxis<\/a> provide a hybrid bus\/taxi mode.<\/p>\n<p>There are four distinct forms of taxicab, which can be identified by slightly differing terms in different countries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Hackney carriage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hackney_carriage\">Hackney carriages<\/a>, also known as <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Public hire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_hire\">public hire<\/a>, hailed or street taxis, licensed for hailing throughout communities<\/li>\n<li>Private hire vehicles, also known as minicabs or private hire taxis, licensed for pre-booking only<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Taxibus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxibus\">Taxibuses<\/a>, also known as jitneys, operating on pre-set routes typified by multiple stops and multiple independent passengers<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Limousine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Limousine\">Limousines<\/a>, specialized vehicle licensed for operation by pre-booking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although types of vehicles and methods of regulation, hiring, dispatching, and negotiating payment differ significantly from country to country, many common characteristics exist.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxicab\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Yellow Cab<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: &#8220;Harry Nathaniel Allen of The New York Taxicab Company, who imported the first 600 gas-powered <a title=\"New York City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a> taxicabs from France in 1907, coined the word &#8220;taxicab&#8221; as a contraction of &#8220;<a title=\"Taximeter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taximeter\">taximeter<\/a> <a title=\"Cabriolet (carriage)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cabriolet_%28carriage%29\">cabriolet<\/a>&#8220;. &#8220;Taximeter&#8221; is an adaptation of the <a title=\"French language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_language\">French<\/a> word <i>taxim\u00e8tre<\/i>, coined from <a title=\"Medieval Latin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medieval_Latin\">Medieval Latin<\/a> <i>taxa<\/i>, which means <i>tax<\/i> or <i>charge<\/i>, together with <i>meter<\/i> from the <a title=\"Greek language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_language\">Greek<\/a> <i>metron<\/i> (<span lang=\"grc\" xml:lang=\"grc\">??????<\/span>) meaning measure.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxicab#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> A &#8220;cabriolet&#8221; is a type of horse-drawn carriage, from the <a title=\"French language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_language\">French<\/a> word &#8220;cabrioler&#8221; (&#8220;leap, caper&#8221;), from Italian &#8220;capriolare&#8221; (&#8220;to jump&#8221;), from Latin &#8220;capreolus&#8221; (&#8220;roebuck&#8221;, &#8220;wild goat&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>The taxicabs of Paris were equipped with the first meters beginning on March 9, 1898. For <i>k<\/i> = 3 and <i>j<\/i> = 2, they coincide with <a title=\"Taxicab number\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxicab_number\">taxicab numbers<\/a>.
