It is not regarded as an aggressive species, found in the wild in widely scattered sites, usually in the vicinity of past or present human habitations.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syringa_vulgaris#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syringa_vulgaris#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syringa_vulgaris#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i>Syringa vulgaris<\/i> is a large <a title=\"Deciduous\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deciduous\">deciduous<\/a> <a title=\"Shrub\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shrub\">shrub<\/a> or multi-stemmed small <a title=\"Tree\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tree\">tree<\/a>, growing to 6\u20137\u00a0m (20\u201323\u00a0ft) high, producing secondary shoots (&#8220;suckers&#8221;) from the base or roots, with stem diameters of up to 20\u00a0cm (8\u00a0in), which in the course of decades may produce a small clonal thicket.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syringa_vulgaris#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> The <a title=\"Bark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bark\">bark<\/a> is grey to grey-brown, smooth on young stems, longitudinally furrowed and flaking on older stems. The <a title=\"Leaf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leaf\">leaves<\/a> are simple, 4\u201312\u00a0cm (2\u20135\u00a0in) and 3\u20138\u00a0cm broad, light green to glaucous, oval to cordate, with pinnate leaf venation, a mucronate <a title=\"Meristem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meristem\">apex<\/a> and an entire margin. They are arranged in opposite pairs or occasionally in <a title=\"Whorl (botany)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whorl_%28botany%29\">whorls<\/a> of three. The <a title=\"Flower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flower\">flowers<\/a> have a tubular base to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Corolla (flower)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corolla_%28flower%29\">corolla<\/a> 6\u201310\u00a0mm long with an open four-lobed apex 5\u20138\u00a0mm across, usually <a title=\"Lilac (color)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilac_%28color%29\">lilac<\/a> to <a title=\"Mauve\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauve\">mauve<\/a>, occasionally white. They are arranged in dense, terminal <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Panicles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panicles\">panicles<\/a> 8\u201318\u00a0cm (3\u20137\u00a0in) long.
