Each bar is an <a title=\"Idiophone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idiophone\">idiophone<\/a> tuned to a pitch of a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Musical scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musical_scale\">musical scale<\/a>, whether <a title=\"Pentatonic scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pentatonic_scale\">pentatonic<\/a> or <a title=\"Heptatonic scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heptatonic_scale\">heptatonic<\/a> in the case of many African and Asian instruments, <a title=\"Diatonic scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diatonic_scale\">diatonic<\/a> in many western children&#8217;s instruments, or <a title=\"Chromatic scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chromatic_scale\">chromatic<\/a> for orchestral use.<\/p>\n<p>The term <i>xylophone<\/i> may be used generally, to include all such instruments, such as the <a title=\"Marimba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marimba\">marimba<\/a>, <a title=\"Balafon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Balafon\">balafon<\/a> and even the <a title=\"Semantron\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantron\">semantron<\/a>. However, in the <a title=\"Orchestra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orchestra\">orchestra<\/a>, the term <i>xylophone<\/i> refers specifically to a chromatic instrument of somewhat higher pitch range and drier <a title=\"Timbre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timbre\">timbre<\/a> than the <a title=\"Marimba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marimba\">marimba<\/a>, and these two instruments should not be confused.<\/p>\n<p>The term is also popularly used to refer to similar instruments of the <a title=\"Lithophone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithophone\">lithophone<\/a> and <a title=\"Metallophone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metallophone\">metallophone<\/a> types.
