Women’s Work 1 (2003)
Women’s Work 1 is the first in a series of quilts about women’s work and
the way it is depicted in American society. Despite women doing work outside
the home, the home is still perceived as the domain of women. The work associated
with the home mostly reflects on the woman of the house. The motifs in current
fabrics are perfect for this series because many of them glorify tasks that
most women find tedious. The blocks for this quilt were begun at the 2003
Marin Needle Arts Guild symposium in a session with Gwen Marston. The freedom
of her techniques is fun and ‘liberating.’ Colleen Granger did an excellent
job quilting this piece.
