Women’s Work 1 (2003)

Women’s Work 1 is the first in a series of quilts about women’s work and the way it is depicted in American society. Despite women doing work outside the home, the home is still perceived as the domain of women. The work associated with the home mostly reflects on the woman of the house. The motifs in current fabrics are perfect for this series because many of them glorify tasks that most women find tedious. The blocks for this quilt were begun at the 2003 Marin Needle Arts Guild symposium in a session with Gwen Marston. The freedom of her techniques is fun and ‘liberating.’ Colleen Granger did an excellent job quilting this piece.
