Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

I started work on the back of the Nosegay on Sunday. This is how far as I got – a strip approximately 5ft by 2ft. UGH! I cursed the size of this quilt the entire time. Something about this piece makes it seem so much harder. Still, I am determined to soldier and use up those 1930s fabrics. I am hoping that some miracle will make it go faster this weekend. Perhaps a change of attitude?

The fun thing I did on Monday was finish blocks 5 & 6 for the Pineapple. I have been slowly adding strips in between working on the backs of various quilts and other projects. A little work goes a long way.

I couldn’t resist setting them all together and taking a photo. I worried about the corners being too close in color, but I think they look OK. I have since moved the top middle block 90 degrees, but left it in the same spot and I am happy with it.

I finished another one of the Cross Blocks on Monday at Craft Night. I probably should not have put the two yellows together, but I did. After I make a few more blocks, I will look at the effect and see if want to take the second yellow piece off.

I decided to take Laume’s advice and do the scrappy look like she suggested in Cross Block Redux. This means that I have more flexibility in using and placing fabrics, which is a great relief. Whatever I do, these two blocks need to be far apart in the quilt. That stripe is very noticeable.

  1. I’m just tickled to pieces that I could be helpful.

I can see what you mean about the stripes. Another thing that would probably help is if they weren’t facing the same direction as well.

As for the pineapple blocks – your comment “I worried about the corners being too close in color” – huh? I don’t understand what you were worried about. They look fantastic!

  2. i love the pineapple blocks — i meant to say something about what makes them pineapple-y to me – it looks like a cross section of a pineapple to me for some reason.

and the cross blocks look like bottles of champagne being opened 🙂

    what fun!!

ps – good job persevering w/the top one.

  3. Deirdre: I am loving the pineapple blocks as well. They are so cheerful, or as JulieZS says: an Explosion of Cheerful.

Laume: I think it will be easier to see the differences and uniqueness when I get more blocks made. I really appreciate you taking the time to show me what you meant, because I really think it was the best solution. Regarding the colors being too close; I just worry that if the same colors are next to each other that they will bleed into each other and ruin the effect. I’ll worry about it when I place all the blocks in the final layout.

Kristen: Now I see what you mean about the pineapples looking like pineapples in a way. I think you are right. I guess those Cross Blocks do kind of look like bottles of champagne. Maybe I will call the quilt that. I need to make some more blocks before I decide.

This blog is really great for getting feedback. I am pretty much of a solitary quiltmaker and this blog allows me to stay in my comfort zone and still get helpful feedback. Thanks for reading!
