This is the product of the Tula Pink’s City Sampler: 100 Modern Quilt Blocks.

The beginning of this project came from two different directions. First, Friend Julie bought me the book as a gift. Second, the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild formed a small group to work on making the blocks in this book together. I decided that I would use the colors of winter here in the Bay Area to inspire me in the colors I would choose for this quilt. I also keep wanting to succeed in choosing colors of blue and green that are calming and have the effect of creating a calm feeling quilt.

I started it in 2014 with high hopes of having a fun joint experience with Julie. Of course, it was fun to work on the quilt with her at the same time, but the whole experience was not that great. The BAM group kind of petered out. I had problems with my seam allowance. Coupled with the small pieces in a lot of the blocks, many of the blocks came out the wrong sizes. I think of myself as a competent piecer, so this problem was extremely frustrating especially when I couldn’t diagnose the cause of the problem.

I originally called this quilt Tale of Two Cities, because Julie was living in another city then, but the name didn’t stick so it is just City Sampler.
