This is the first Food Quilt that I made. I eventually ended up making three. The theme makes great boy quilts.
The last quilt I made for William Lapachet was the Eye Spy quilt. Early in 2011, William asked me where his annual quilt was. I had no idea he expected an annual quilt. I suggested a food quilt and he agreed. I kind of wanted to work with some bold fabrics and thought of the Farmer’s Market fabrics by RJR.
I started buying fat quarters of the fabrics when I saw them. I realized quickly that I needed to keep track of which fabrics from the Farmer’s Market group so I could make sure I had a wide variety of the fabrics.
During a trip back East I shopped at some Amish quilt shops. They had a wide variety of the fabrics – more than I had ever seen before. I wasn’t always able to purchase just fat quarters, so I bought half yards, which was much too much.
I still didn’t know what to do with these fabrics in terms of pattern. I had seen a friend, Robin, make a Disappearing Nine Patch. Thus, I had also had that pattern on my mind. There was something about that pattern that intrigued me. There was something about simple piecing combined with cutting up a simple pattern and recombining it. I don’t know what it is, but I really like the pattern. I like the possibilities. I thought the pattern has the ability to showcase conversational fabrics.
