Meditation on Swoons

Swoon Top
Swoon Top

Perhaps I should have called this post “Second Guessing Myself”.

Back in January I finished the Swoon top and a short time later I sent it to the quilter.

I got it back last week. As usual, she did a fantastic job. I am merrily sewing down the binding, generally enjoying my cheerful Swoon in all its pink and orange loveliness.

THEN.

Camille Roskelly, the designer of the Swoon quilt, posts a new Swoon she has just finished.

Sigh.

I love her work. I love her fabrics. I would probably love her if she were a friend. But this newest quilt makes me wonder if I should have made the background all the same so the Swoony motifs float. I thought I was being so clever making the blocks different. Now I don’t feel so clever. I feel like I did it wrong. 🙁

The post is making me wonder if I should make a Swoon out of the Joel Dewberry Notting Hill fabric. I do love that fabric. Perhaps this all isn’t so bad after all.

  1. You’re forgetting that there are no rules in quilting! You didn’t make yours wrong, you made yours differently and it’s beautiful!! Camille’s is very pretty too but it looks like lots of other quilts out there with white backgrounds. If there is another fabric line you want to try it out with, go for it but don’t feel your original isn’t good enough. It’s lovely!

  2. I love your Swoon! I perused many Swoon quilt images before beginning mine. Your’s definitely would have been one that I would have chosen as inspirational material to design my own. It almost has an Australian feel to it, I think. BTW, I love how you post quilting prompts. I just discovered your blog recently and I’m so glad that I did. Thank you for sharing your creativity with the world!

    1. I love it that you think it has an Australian feel to it. I hope you will join the Creative Prompts project. 5 minutes a week is all you need (in addition to the time it takes to read the prompt, of course!)

  3. Dont beat yourself up… or down. This quilt is YOU… your colors… your take on a very fun block. It’s bright and cheerful… you should be too!

  4. Number One: I like your sassy Swoon. Just like it is.

That being said, yes, make one out of the Notting Hill collection. That would be awewome! (Yeah, I oughta get me some of that too!)

    1. Buy some before it is all gone, Gretchen! There are still places that have it. I wonder, really wonder if the directionality of the Notting Hill fabric would work with this pattern.

  5. I love your swoon!!! If you make another do it because you want to not because you want it to look like others!!! As everyone has stated…your first one fits your personality to the tee…bright and cheery!!!

  6. We are all individuals and we are suppose to use others work as guides. Your quilt is beautiful and different just like us. Quilt on …keep changing it up!

    1. It is also a product of the way I worked on it. I didn’t start it, work on it constantly, then finish it. I also didn’t have enough fabric to make it the way others make. Thanks for your support.

  7. A pattern can be made to look a thousand different ways – you know that and your interpretation is fantastic. It’s scrappy looking, bright and cheerful and your sense of color makes it work. I want to cuddle under this quilt!

  8. Should? Your quilt is wonderful! If you want another look, do another Swoon quilt, right? Even a small one could satisfy the desire for the floating look, smaller blocks?

  9. Personally I think the one you made fits you perfectly. While the other one is nice, it doesn’t have the same flair. Trust yourself as you encourage us to do.
