I have been wanting to the create the Library or reading area in my house forever and this prompt was the perfect opportunity. It took me awhile to get the chair the way I, mostly, wanted it. I have a similar chair that I never get to sit in anymore. I may add some color to the books.
WOW! July already! Can you believe it?21 days until Lil Sissy‘s birthday and 26 days until DH’s. July and August are huge birthday months for our family. I had better get busy!
Parts of this drawing didn’t come out the way I intended, but that is the way of the world.I’ll do better next time, right?
Take a look at the original prompt and add your own response.
The middle coffee poster is taken from a coffee poster that is hanging in a Starbuck’s near my office. Yergacheffe or Yirgacheffe is a kind of Ethiopian coffee.
I saw this poster when I first met Pamela Allen. She makes the greatest eyes and includes them in her pieces. This poster made me think of her, so I took a picture and sent her the photo. This image has been in my mind ever since.
I had this in my mind for awhile and started it once then threw that one out, because I had to go and look at feathers. I was reminded to get back to sketching before I do the final. I gave you a little peek at the top of the building.
This prompt response rattled around in my head for quite a while. I had a different imageof what I wanted to do in my mind, but changed what I drew at the last second after looking through my prompt responses from before. This drawing is related to Winter and Trees. I might need to work through my original idea as well. We will see.
I am trying to get back to sketching more detail. I am still trying to refer back to other responses. Do you remember the umbrella from Flame and Summer?
When I took art classes in college I always enjoyed contour drawing. Contour drawing is where you look at the object you are drawing and NOT at your paper.
I got quite good at it and decided that I would use that technique for my Inspiration drawing. It took me awhile to actually get to it and when I finally did I just sat down and drew with what I had – no fancy drawing book or paper or pen. I used the following two photos as the basis for my inspiration drawings.
Dishes are below:
And here are the contour drawings:

I left a little of the notebook page in when I cropped the picture so you could see that I just used my working journal; I didn’t use anything special. I did the drawing at a Starbuck’s using a picture on my phone and the pen I had in my purse.
Here is the place setting:
This one came out much better. I am out of practice using this technique. One of the things I like about contour drawing is the movement you get in the drawing.
I often sit down at my sketchbook and wonder whose dumb idea the current word is? Then I remind myself it was mine and resolve to find a better word for the next week.
This one actually formed in my head pretty quickly. I wanted to look up an actually picture of Big Ben and Parliament, but was, ultimately, too lazy.
In addition to this post being about a creative prompt response, since it has hearts, it will also be a Valentine’s wish for you!
Here are some of the designs I was working on. What I wanted to draw was a Baltimore Album Quilt in the window of the shop I have been drawing. I started to test the basket design and just didn’t feel the love. I have been feeling a little impatient lately and I think my inability to settle on these last few drawings is a symptom.
I did this study after the main part of the hand drawing. I was trying to see if I could add more detail and make the piece look better.
I really felt a lot of hope for 2010. I can’t say that it has dissipated, but this past week was difficult on a lot of levels, so I don’t feel quite as jubilant as I did as the New Year turned. STILL, I am not going to let one week kick that great, jubilant frame of mind into the garbage.
Fortunately, I couldn’t get away from Opportunity knocks, so here is opportunity knocking!
This isn’t one of my best drawings, but I feel good about having a bit of confidnece to put a figure in. Fortunately cold weather makes a ginormous coat seem somewhat normal.
